How To Use Help Elements To Improve Your Designs — Smashing Magazine
When designing a website, the most important thing is to make it as usable and convenient as possible. On a website on which users could possibly get confused, it is best to include help elements. Help elements come in all different shapes and sizes: an entire page, a suggestion box or a quick tip. But they all have one thing in common: besides doing the obvious (i.e. helping the user), help elements provide an extra convenience that brings the website closer to that sought-after usability.
Responsive Grid Design: Ultimate Guide
I find working with the grid helpful. The grid helps to maintain consistency across the different layouts and make faster design decisions. Grids give more precise control over alignments and layout on different screen sizes.
Fixed-Width Layout Grid Setup
To set up a fixed-width grid, we use fixed numeric value for gutters and columns. I recommend 74px wide columns, 32px wide gutters and 16px side margins on each side.
Mobile View
For mobile devices, we use a fluid grid where gutters and side margins have fixed numeric values. I recommend 16px wide gutters and 16px wide side margins on each side.
We can design mobile interfaces at 360×640 sized artboard.
Mobile devices have a small screen resolution. If we display the 12 separate columns, gutters, and side margins on such a small resolution, it becomes quite cumbersome to design at scale.

Debugging with Perl
Eugen Konkov — 45 minutes 🐪
Interactive debugging.
This talk about how to catch and report perl application exceptions.
An example based on Mojolicious web server will be given.
I will show how to reproduce exceptions and debug them.
The example will describe how to access and view data at any stack frame.
Also I will show how to implement new debugger commands and how to debug them (yeah, you understand right: how to debug perl debugger while debugging)
This talk will about my second proprietary debugger. It is full rewrite of first version: https://github.com/KES777/Devel-DebugHooks

Replacing sugar with allulose - Peter Attia
Allulose is on the top of my sweetener preference list for both objective and subjective reasons.
Although allulose is not as sweet as sugar, I have found that when my daughter bakes with a 1:1 replacement ratio as called upon by recipes, it is still plenty sweet. In short, allulose provides a reasonable amount of sweetness for my family. One aesthetic caveat is that allulose browns in the baking process so it is best used for darker-colored goods…unless you are like me and don’t mind a brown-colored angel food cake.

Watch Stanley Tucci's Instagram Video on How to Make A Negroni
In the three-minute video, he walks viewers through his steps to make the classic cocktail, which requires some ice, a double shot of gin (or vodka), a shot of sweet vermouth, and a shot of Campari. He also throws some shade on Martini brand vermouth. Sorry, friends. Oh, and the pièce de résistance is a quick squeeze of an orange that also acts as a garnish. Like any responsible chef, he takes a sip to test the drink before turning it over.

A Modern CSS Reset - Post - Piccalilli
In this modern era of web development, we don’t really need a heavy-handed reset, or even a reset at all, because CSS browser compatibility issues are much less likely than they were in the old IE 6 days. That era was when resets such as normalize.css came about and saved us all heaps of hell. Those days are gone now and we can trust our browsers to behave more, so I think resets like that are probably mostly redundant.

Design is more than problem solving | by Dennis Hambeukers | Design Leadership Notebook
Design is problem solving
In a previous essay, I visualized it like this:
By focussing on the thinking part of design, design could move into a broader problem solving space. Hence the statement that design is problem solving. It is. Design solves design problems.
Design is making the world more beautiful
Design is question finding
But design is even more than problem solving and making the world more beautiful.

Most people see design as just the second diamond: problem solving. Most clients approach a designer with a problem definition a.k.a. a design brief. They already know what the problem is and w(previous essay)ant a (team of) designer(s) to solve it for them. If that is actually the right problem, great. Experience tells us that that is not always the case. More often than not, new insights about the problem at hand arise during the solving of the problem. That is why designers often propose to go into the first diamond first to investigate the problem and possibly redefine the problem. This prevents them from designing a brilliant solution for the wrong problem. That can be very expensive. The goal of the first diamond is to make sure we are solving the right problem, find the right question. Most innovations and complex problems benefit hugely from going through the first diamond. In his recent Harvard Business Review article, Art Markman argues that the quality of our problem framing determines the success of your solution.
A Tactical Guide to Managing Up: 30 Tips from the Smartest People We Know
Top startup leaders share their best tips for managing up, including communication tactics, building trust, and goal setting with your manager.
-
Always align on these two questions.
1) What is success for me personally? 2) What is success for my manager’s team? -
Show your work with what matters most.
“To effectively manage up, you’ve got to understand what your boss wants and needs. This is an exercise in radical empathy and motivation,” -
Communicate early and often to avoid surprises.
They think they’re bugging others with constant, timely communication, but this isn’t true at all. When you communicate proactively, you’re giving your leaders up the chain of command the gift of choice: To act on that information, to store that information as notes, or just not do anything with it,” -
Don’t bury your requests.
“Writing regular email updates has by far been one of the most effective ways of managing up. These could be project updates, team wins, or personal progress. The emails don’t need to be overly formal — in fact, many recipients typically appreciate a more familiar tone as long as it doesn’t get in the way of the content,” he says. -
Create a doc to hit the most important points.
“In my 1:1s with my manager, I make sure our shared agenda and notes are populated ahead of time with the topics I want to discuss, as well as providing any context necessary — like linking to relevant documents. Some of the most productive and effective 1:1s are when our agenda and notes are well-organized ahead of the meeting,”
- FYIs that don’t need a discussion
- Updates from the report
- Updates from the manager
- Follow-ups on action items from the previous weeks
- Discussion topics
- Create a State of the Union report.
To simplify managing up and to hold yourself accountable, he suggests sending a weekly “State of Me” email to your boss. “Regularly share what you’re doing, what you plan to do, and what you’ve done with your manager. This weekly email should include your current priorities, things on your mind, and blockers you need help with.
