It provides a CLI and a set of libraries for working with its tools, and is the core component of many video and audio players as a result (including my preferred multimedia player, mpv). If you want to do almost anything with multimedia files — re-encode them, re-mux them, live stream it, whatever — ffmpeg can handle it with ease.

The drawback, of course, is that you can’t see the image when you shoot it because the mirror lifts up to block the display.

The last big thing is battery life and handling: Flagship DSLRs have heavy bodies and big grips that make for stable shooting platforms, particularly with the massive telephoto lenses used by sports and wildlife photographers. They’re also covered with dials and buttons for easier handling. And the optical viewfinder obviously doesn’t drain the battery, so DSLRs can shoot many more photos on a charge.

• 3 cups half & half
• 2-1/2 cups white chocolate chips
• 3-1/2 tablespoons cornstarch
• 1 cup grated dark chocolate
• 1 cup chopped pistachio nuts
• 1 cup whipping cream
• 6 maraschino cherries

Add the half & half and white chocolate chips to a saucepan over medium-low heat, stirring well until the chocolate has completely melted.

Increase the heat to medium-high to bring to a boil. Add the cornstarch a little at the time while stirring vigorously with a whisk for 5-6 minutes until the mixture starts to thicken.

Let cool for 1-2 minutes and pour into martini glasses. Place in the refrigerator for at least 5 hours, preferably overnight.

To serve, cover the top of each with the grated chocolate, add a layer of chopped pistachio nuts, and top with a maraschino cherry.
