On View

JCDecaux bus shelters: New York City, Chicago, and Boston

ANTI-ICON is an exhibition of newly commissioned photographs by Brooklyn-based photographer and performance artist Martine Gutierrez (b. 1989 Berkeley, CA). It continues her exploration of identity across the cultural landscapes of gender, race, class, and celebrity. In ten new works, Gutierrez has transformed herself into a multitude of roles, reinterpreting a diverse canon of radical historical and mythological figures. Through each metamorphosis, Gutierrez embodies the spirit of heroines who have achieved legendary status across cultures, over thousands of years, in both art history and popular culture.

  3. Work Your Extension

Most folks have terrible shoulder extension. Shoulder extension is a seriously undertrained range that your shoulder should have.

Why the GOV.UK Design System team changed the input type for numbers - Technology in government

We take a look at why the GOV.UK Design System changed the element it uses for inputting numbers, making it more accessible and easier to use.

Using <input type="text" inputmode="numeric" pattern="[0-9]*"> allows for a degree of separation between how the user enters data (“input mode”), what the browser expects the user input to contain (type equals number), and potentially how it tries to validate it.

How to Strip Your Laundry and Everything You Need to Get Started
thumbnail

If you aren't hip to the trends, laundry stripping is a soaking method that uses a combination of cleaning products to rid your laundry of any leftover detergent, dirt, oils, and minerals that couldn't be tackled by your typical laundry detergent alone—hello sweaty, dirty, workout clothes. But before you start stripping your whole closet, you should know that this is a relatively harsh clean that can sometimes leech dye from clothing, so be cautious with anything that is not whites and light colors or that has natural dyes.

There are four main ingredients that you will need—Borax, washing soda (also known as sodium carbonate), laundry detergent, and hot water. You start by filling a bathtub with hot water and then adding a 1/4 cup of Borax, 1/4 cup of washing soda, and 1/2 cup of laundry detergent—if you are using a smaller container, use a 1:1:2 ratio according to size. Next you will submerge your clothing into the tub and let it soak until it cools fully. You will also want to stir it occasionally to really break up the buildup. Once cooled, put the laundry through a water only rinse cycle and then tumble dry. This process takes about 5 hours total, but once you get everything in the bathtub, it is pretty hands off.

5 Shoulder Mobility Exercises for Better Posture and Arm Swing
thumbnail

Improve your shoulder mobility and boost your running economy with a few simple moves.

Scapular Push-Up

Start facedown on mat, tuck your toes, then prop yourself up on forearms with elbows under shoulders. Lift hips off the mat, keeping your back straight and abs tight. Clasp one hand around your fist to form a triangle with forearms. Keeping core engaged, bring shoulder blades together and lower chest, stopping when your forehead touches your fist. Push down through forearms to draw apart shoulder blades and return to starting position. Complete 3 sets of 6 reps, resting 30 seconds between sets.

T-Spine Rotation

Lie faceup, knees bent, and feet planted on the floor. Extend right arm to the side, palm facing down. Press right arm into the floor as you slowly drop your legs to the left. Use left hand to gently pull knees toward the floor. Hold for 3 seconds, then return to starting position. Complete 12 reps per side.

Resistance Band Chest Opener

Start in a tall kneeling position, arms at sides. Grip the ends of a resistance band, palms down, and pull it apart to create tension. Keeping elbows straight and maintaining resistance on the band, lift arms overhead. Pause for 1 second, then return to starting position. Complete 2 sets of 10 reps, resting 30 seconds between sets.

Arm Swing

Start in a tall kneeling position, arms at sides, elbows bent 90 degrees, hands in loose fists. Draw one elbow back as you drive the other elbow forward, then immediately switch arm positions. Continue to alternately swing arms back and forward, mimicking the motion of arm drive during running. One swing is one rep. Do as many reps as possible in 20 seconds. Complete 4 sets, resting 30 seconds between sets.

Arm Circle

Start in a tall kneeling position, arms extended out to sides at shoulder height, palms facing down. Make small, clockwise circles with arms, initiating the movement from the upper arm/shoulder joint. One circle is one rep. Do as many reps as possible in 30 seconds. Complete 4 sets, resting 30 seconds between sets.

Best Homemade Refrigerator Pickles

Best Homemade Refrigerator Pickles Recipe: How to make pickles, no canning required! These perky crisp pickles make great sandwich toppers.

How To Make Pickles

This recipe really could not be more simple…

  • Pack a clean pint-sized jar with sliced cucumbers, onion slices, and dill sprigs. Leave a 1/2 inch of space at the top of the jar for liquid.

  • In a small saucepot heat the vinegar, water, garlic, and all spices until the mixture comes to a simmer and the salt and sugar dissolve.

  • Cool the brine down to warm, and fill the jar so everything is covered with brine.

  • Close the lid tightly and refrigerate for 24 hours before eating.

I use the small pickling cucumbers with the thick bumpy skin. They hold up well and stay crunchy. It doesn’t take too many cucumbers to fill a jar either; I was able to fit three 4-inch long sliced cucumbers in a pint-sized jar.

Why some designs look messy, and others don’t

Meet the Extendabox-rule

The four strokes making up a box end at each intersection. But in our unconsciousness, every one of those lines draws out an imaginary line much further, through the entirety of your design.

A grid works the other way around: you define a set of columns, gutters, and rows to make up certain sections of your design, and you then position all of your objects onto that grid.
