A deep investigation into regular expression denial of service (ReDoS) vulnerabilities in JavaScript

Backtracking
It might not seem obvious, but most problems with regular expressions stem from failing to match part of the string they are being evaluated against. Matching is easy, but not matching can cause a process called backtracking where the regular expression engine will go back over choices that it made and try alternatives.

Lost in spaces
Let's have a look at an example. In the Stack Overflow outage, the offending regular expression was /^[\s\u200c]+|[\s\u200c]+$/. Let's break down what each part means:

Builders Surplus in warwick - there are a few other locations but I have found this location to have the best variety of doors and windows. They pretty much get the oversupply from Home Depot so they can have some good finds.

The Restore in Charlestown - if your ok with second hand, you can find some great deals here. They will sometimes post what they have on Facebook or Craigslist, but you're usually better off making the drive.

Remodelers Outlet in Fall River - if you're willing to make the drive, this is a great place for doors. They have tons of stock along with returned/uncollected special orders and if they have nothing in your size they can also customize a door for you. We bought a door from them a couple months ago as we had a weirdly sized closet opening and they happened to have a returned door that nearly fit, just had to cut down the height, and it only cost us around $70 if I remember right; over a $100 less than if we had it special ordered from Lowes or HD.

Until I came to read Schwern’s little gem, hinting to turn AutoCommit off. That hit the nail so good that one single hit sufficed.

Text::CSV_XS is extremely fast, using that to handle the CSV should take care of that side of the performance problem.

There should be no need for special bulk insert code to make DBD::SQLite performant. An insert statement with bind parameters is very fast. The main trick is to turn off AutoCommit in DBI and do all the inserts in a single transaction.
