Do You Own the Songs You Strum on Your Ukulele? Understanding Copyrights and the Public Domain | Ukulele Magazine

QRCode

Song suggestions:
Today, the length of that limited monopoly on a song is 95 years after its publication. This is very good news if you’re performing or recording gems like “Won’t You Come Home Bill Bailey” (Hughie Cannon, 1902), “Fascinating Rhythm” (George and Ira Gershwin, 1924) or “Beautiful Dreamer” (Stephen Foster, 1862). The copyright protection for songs published in 1924 expired on January 1, 2020, putting some of the greatest ukulele tunes of all time, such as “Everybody Loves My Baby,” “Nobody’s Sweetheart Now,” and “It Had to Be You” in the public domain. (On January 1, 2021, it will be 1925 songs that lose their protection, and so on.) Once copyrights have expired, you’re free to perform, record, and reuse a song without permission. But what if you’re interested in something a little more recent?

How to Strum Your Ukulele: 6 Tips to Get Started | Ukulele Magazine

QRCode

One aspect of playing ukulele that often gets overlooked is the actual technique of strumming. Learn how to strum ukulele with these 6 strumming tips and tricks.

  • The thumb can often create the warmest and most tender sounds of the ukulele. Don’t try to “hit” the ukulele, but rather, rake your thumb across just like a harpist might glide along their strings.

  • imagine the movement you make when you turn a doorknob. Minimize your movements by aiming to strum between the top and bottom strings, instead of strumming from above the body to below the body. Try to use the center of your nail when strumming with your index finger.

Beginner Ukulele Lesson: Getting Off the Page Will Instantly Improve Your Playing | Ukulele Magazine

QRCode

The first step in learning a song is to listen to a recording until you can hum the basic melody and feel the rhythm.

Our major scale looks like this: I–ii–iii–IV–V–vi–vii dim. Using this pattern, in the key of G, for example, the chords are: G major–A minor–B minor–C major–D major–E minor–F# diminished.

After you have those chord shapes under your fingers and the sound of the chords in your ears, play each chord starting from the home chord of the key, the I chord. Play I–ii, I–iii, I–IV, I–V, I–vi, I–viidim (C–Dm, C–Em, C–F, C–G, C–Am, C–Bdim). You are now playing the intervals, or distances, from the I chord to the other notes of the scale. Listen closely as you play these chord intervals and record them in your iHead player—these intervals are the building blocks of the songs you want to learn.

Schoenberg: Drei Klavierstücke, Op. 11 (Pollini)

QRCode

These wonderful little pieces are works that you (probably) have to learn to love, but which can be loved nonetheless -- and it certainly helps that Pollini plays them with intimacy and expressiveness. Though atonal, these pieces are nonetheless thinly swathed in the last vestiges of classical form and harmony: you can glimpse shades of lyrical melody, chordal accompaniments, ABA structure in the first piece, expressive appoggiaturas, pedal tones, and so on. Formally speaking there's a vast (unimaginably vast) number of things that can be said about these three pieces, standing as they are at the very threshold of full-blooded modern serial atonality, but that's not in fact that helpful if you want to just enjoy listening to these. So instead I suggest several ways of listening to these:

  1. Three tableaux: a silent evening in a house soon to be demolished, a funeral, a fire swallowing a factory.
  2. Five paintings: Picasso's The Blue Room, Francis Bacon's Head I / Böcklin's Isle of the Dead, Munch's The Scream / Kandinsky's Composition VII
  3. Three preludes: a nocturne out of late Liszt, a Brahmsian intermezzo/lament, a piece out of Schumann's Kriesleriana.
  4. Three myths: Sisyphus, Dante, Zeus and Leda.
  5. Music for films from the black-and-white era. Imagine whatever you choose.

Khruangbin: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

QRCode

May 16, 2018 | Bob Boilen -- It was daylight but the music was dark and moody. And despite having the office lights turned on high, it was Khruangbin's trance-inducing tone that set the mood and carried me away.

This trio from Houston, Texas is heavily inspired by 1960s and '70s funk and soul from, of all places, Thailand. That musical passion has taken them on a journey that, these days, incorporates music from Spain, Ethiopia and the Middle East. Khruangbin's largely instrumental music is grounded in Laura Lee's bass, with Mark Speer playing those melodic, richly reverbed guitar sounds and Donald "DJ" Johnson on drums and piano.

Two of the three songs performed at this Tiny Desk Concert are from their 2018 album Con Todo El Mundo, which is dedicated in part to Laura Lee's Mexican-American grandfather. He'd often ask her how much she loved him and the response that pleased him most was when she would say, "con todo el mundo," (with all the world.)

The third track in this performance is one of the band's first forays into vocals, from their 2015 debut album, The Universe Smiles Upon You. "White Gloves" gently pays homage to a "classy lady" who was "a fighter" and who "died in a fight." Its open-ended lyrics could imply a battle that was violent or an illness. It isn't clear. What is clear is the reverence in the song and in this music — music that strays from typical instrumental songs with heavy beats. This is music to sway to and to lift you beyond the day to day.
