Finish Carpentry Tips Every DIYer Should Know | Family Handyman
Trimwork can be challenging to install. Here are some tips to help you handle the most troublesome situations that finish carpentry poses.
Tighten Up Open Miters
The quickest and easiest way to cut a slight back bevel is to shim the molding so it’s resting at an angle to the saw blade. A pencil makes a handy shim and is just about the right thickness.
Cut Steep Angles on Your Miter Saw
It’s not common, but occasionally you’ll run into a situation that requires miters greater than the 45- or 50-degree angle available on miter saws. An easy way to handle this is to cut a block of wood at a 45-degree angle and cut a flat spot for the clamp. Clamp the molding to the block and line up the miter saw with the mark to make the cut.
Scribe Trim to Fit Uneven Walls
Angle a Nail to Close Baseboard Gaps
Make Blocks for Tough Transitions
Big Humps Require Surgery
A stud that’s not lined up with the plate causes a big hump in the wall, making it difficult to get the baseboard tight.
Clean Out Corners Before You Start
Keep Baseboard from Tipping
Cut strips of wood to the thickness of the drywall and cut off small pieces to use as spacers at inside corners or wherever they’re needed.
Join Moldings with Biscuits
How to Install Surface-Mounted Wiring and Conduit | Family Handyman
Adding a new light or receptacle to your garage or basement is easier than you think.
Always work from the power source to the end of your pipe run. That way, you always have an “open” end of the conduit for adding boxes and fittings. (It’s really hard to jam a piece of pipe in between existing, attached boxes.) Remove the existing box from the stud. If you have extra Romex in the wall, great! Pull it through the hole.

Hinge Adjustment for a Door's Final Fit - Fine Homebuilding
By Tucker Windover Issue 192
Learn how to avoid a door that creaks or springs back from the closed position. Easy adjustments to screws, mortises, and hinges on interior doors contribute to a perfect fit. Read more to learn how to adjust door hinge.
Adjust the gap by bending the hinges
Open the hinge-side gap by spreading the hinges. I’ve seen shims used behind the hinge leaf to adjust the gap, but bending the hinge takes less time. I can widen the gap in small increments. Remember that when the gap is adjusted on one side, it affects the gap on the other side as well. Place the butt end of a nailset between the hinge leaves up against the pin eyelet, or hinge knuckle. When the door is pulled toward the closed position, the nailset spreads the leaves and widens the gap. This technique puts a lot of force on the hinge, so go slowly to avoid damaging the hinge or bending it too far.
How to Build a Fence Gate (DIY) | Family Handyman
This article tells how to build a durable, good-looking fence, from start to finish, as well as how to build a gate that works perfectly.
The key to our no-sag gate is using panel boards that are angled at 45 degrees. Each functions as a brace to keep the panel from sagging over time. The outer frame on each side also overlaps in opposite ways at each corner to make the gate even more solid.
Here’s the secret to hanging gates successfully. With the gates spaced 1/2 in. apart on the ground, screw two 2×4 or 2×6 “holding” boards to the gates, overhanging the ends several inches. Then carry the assembly over to the opening and rest it on blocks at each end.
Do front doors really cost $7,000? | Reddit
Since you are in RI I have a few places you should check out and compare prices:
Builders Surplus in warwick - there are a few other locations but I have found this location to have the best variety of doors and windows. They pretty much get the oversupply from Home Depot so they can have some good finds.
Home Outlet - there is a location in both east providence and warwick. Most of their stock is available to browse on the website and you can even see if they are clearancing out anything.
The Restore in Charlestown - if your ok with second hand, you can find some great deals here. They will sometimes post what they have on Facebook or Craigslist, but you're usually better off making the drive.
Remodelers Outlet in Fall River - if you're willing to make the drive, this is a great place for doors. They have tons of stock along with returned/uncollected special orders and if they have nothing in your size they can also customize a door for you. We bought a door from them a couple months ago as we had a weirdly sized closet opening and they happened to have a returned door that nearly fit, just had to cut down the height, and it only cost us around $70 if I remember right; over a $100 less than if we had it special ordered from Lowes or HD.
