How To Paint a Door Like a Pro | Family Handyman
Painting a door might seem straightforward, but achieving a professional finish requires careful preparation and the right techniques. Whether you’re refreshing an old door or giving a new one a flawless coat, following these expert steps will ensure a smooth, durable result.
-
Drill one 3/16-in. hole in the bottom of the door and two at the top, then turn 4-in. by 1/4-in. lag screws 1-1/2 inch into the door. Spread the sawhorses apart just enough so that the door doesn’t touch either side but rests entirely on the bolts.
-
Clean Off Grime Before You Prime
-
Fill All Holes, Even Small ones
-
Prime the Entire Door Before Painting
-
Search for Flaws After Priming

Hinge Adjustment for a Door's Final Fit - Fine Homebuilding
By Tucker Windover Issue 192
Learn how to avoid a door that creaks or springs back from the closed position. Easy adjustments to screws, mortises, and hinges on interior doors contribute to a perfect fit. Read more to learn how to adjust door hinge.
Adjust the gap by bending the hinges
Open the hinge-side gap by spreading the hinges. I’ve seen shims used behind the hinge leaf to adjust the gap, but bending the hinge takes less time. I can widen the gap in small increments. Remember that when the gap is adjusted on one side, it affects the gap on the other side as well. Place the butt end of a nailset between the hinge leaves up against the pin eyelet, or hinge knuckle. When the door is pulled toward the closed position, the nailset spreads the leaves and widens the gap. This technique puts a lot of force on the hinge, so go slowly to avoid damaging the hinge or bending it too far.
Do front doors really cost $7,000? | Reddit
Since you are in RI I have a few places you should check out and compare prices:
Builders Surplus in warwick - there are a few other locations but I have found this location to have the best variety of doors and windows. They pretty much get the oversupply from Home Depot so they can have some good finds.
Home Outlet - there is a location in both east providence and warwick. Most of their stock is available to browse on the website and you can even see if they are clearancing out anything.
The Restore in Charlestown - if your ok with second hand, you can find some great deals here. They will sometimes post what they have on Facebook or Craigslist, but you're usually better off making the drive.
Remodelers Outlet in Fall River - if you're willing to make the drive, this is a great place for doors. They have tons of stock along with returned/uncollected special orders and if they have nothing in your size they can also customize a door for you. We bought a door from them a couple months ago as we had a weirdly sized closet opening and they happened to have a returned door that nearly fit, just had to cut down the height, and it only cost us around $70 if I remember right; over a $100 less than if we had it special ordered from Lowes or HD.

DIY Cabinet Doors: How to Build and Install Cabinet Doors
If you’ve got a table saw, here’s a new way to put it to work: making cabinet doors. You don’t need any special jigs— just your saw, large or small, a miter gauge and a sharp blade. And you don’t need any specially prepared wood; material from a home center will be fine.
