Grout or caulk between acrylic bathtub and tile? - Home Improvement Stack Exchange

QRCode

Contractor who remodeled our bathroom used non-sanded grout between bathtub (acrylic) and first layer of tile. He said that he recommends that instead of caulk as caulk will be trapping moisture and

  • FILL THE TUB TO WEIGH IT DOWN!

  • Take your time. Don't rush it or you'll be doing it again within a year or two. It might take two nights to get the old caulk all out. So what. You want a job that will last.

  • Clean out all the old caulk. Use a 1" paint scraper, razor blade scraper, knife, maybe high grit sandpaper so long as the part sanded will be caulked over.

  • Buy the most expensive Tub and Tile caulk you can find. I prefer GE. You don't want to have to do the job again and $10 - $15 isn't much when you consider the aggravation of redoing it.

  • Right before caulking saturate a portion of a clean cloth with rubbing alcohol and force it into the joint. Wipe it once from each direction to make sure its clean. Then let it dry.

  • Cut the caulk tube diameter to the width of the average gap.

  • Caulk the gap, not the tub or tile outside surface. The caulk needs to contact both inner surfaces, but for aesthetics, don't overlap the two outside surfaces more than about 1/8".

  • After caulking the gap along one wall, dip the smallest finger that will bridge the gap in rubbing alcohol and quickly and firmly wipe straight down the gap. If not suitable, wipe the finger with a piece of toilet paper, fold, discard, re-Hopdip finger in alcohol, and repeat.

  • PULL TAPE IMMEDIATELY! DON'T LET THE CAULK SET

This beginner leather tutorial goes through the process of making your own DIY leather desk mat, from materials, to tooling, to the making process. This project can be completed with tools you will already have around the house, but I also show how some beginner leather tooling can be used to improve the overall quality of your leather desk pad.

If you are new to leather craft, this video is the latest in a short series of tutorials on leather crafting for beginners. While I usually include free leather patterns for you to download, there is no specific leather desk pad pattern so that you can design this to suit your specific needs! The desk pad made in this video is 23x12": a pretty standard small sized desk pad which works perfectly as a keyboard mat and an easy DIY mouse pad, or as a place to work on your laptop!

#PickleProject: Travel accessories and zippers and Duffel bags, oh my! | Dill Pickle Gear

QRCode

Part 1 has some basics about sewing in zippers (it’s easy! really!!) and making various small bags and pouches that can be great as travel accessories, school supplies, a way to organize your backpack or all those chargers and cords, etc.

Part 2 extends the same concepts a little further to make two different styles of duffel bag. These look complicated and fancy, but I promise you they are easier than they look and quite accessible.

Ask Slashdot: Cheap and Fun Audio Hacks?

QRCode

A few years back I discovered that even a person of limited soldering skills can create a nifty surround-sound system with the magic of a passive matrix decoder system; the results pleased me and continue to, It's certainly not a big and fancy surround system, but I recommend it highly as a project with a high ratio of satisfaction to effort. (Here's one of the many, many tutorials out there on doing it yourself; it's not the long-forgotten one I actually used, but I like this one better.) I like listening to recorded music sometimes just to hear how a particular playback system sounds, not just to hear the music "as intended." I'd like to find some more audio hacks and tricks like this that are cheap, easy, and fun. Bonus points if they can be done with the assistance of a couple of smart children, without boring them too much. I have access to Goodwill and other thrift stores that are usually overflowing with cheap-and-cheerful gear, to match my toy budget. What mods or fixes would be fun to implement? Are there brands or models of turntable I should look for as the easiest with which to tinker? Are there cool easy-entry projects akin to that surround sound system that I could use to improve my radio reception? I'm not sure what's out there, but I'd like to get some cool use out of the closet-and-a-half I've got filled with speakers and other gear that I can't quite bear to toss, since "it still works."
