THE first volume of Scripta Minoa was published in 1909. It contained, as Part I, an account of the Prae-Phoenician Scripts of Crete, their Mediterranean relations and place in Minoan story (pp. i-i 10). Part II described the Hieroglyphic or Conventionalized Pictographic Script, with its antecedents and affinities (pp. 111-293). Part HI discussed the Phaestos Disk (pp. 294-302). An Analytical Index (pp. 294-302) was in effect a detailed table of contents; and there were twelve collotype plates.

When designing for digital spaces, it’s natural to default to digital mockup tools, but doing so cuts out a world of possibilities. Analog drawing can unleash your imagination and allow you to focus on what’s most important at the start: the ideas.

I take a lot of photos and save them in a colour folder on my phone. I have found potential palettes in book shops, supermarkets and even restaurant toilet decor!

I often take photos of colour palettes I’ve seen in galleries and museums. Looking back at photos for this post, I’ve realised that I’m repeatedly drawn to certain colour combinations.

I really love using a limited palette. I love the simplicity and impact it can have and the way it can focus attention on particular things.

If you need to use an image for your art, product, project, or any other reason, check out the Smithsonian's vast collection of Open Access images available under the Creative Commons Zero (CC0) license. I searched "cat," and it returned over 7,000 images, and every one I looked at was terrific.

Walk around. Pay attention. Take pictures.

Bill says there’s two ways to pay attention while you’re walking:

1. “Ambient noticing” — you’re just soaking in everything, taking in the big picture, and letting things come at you
2. “Purposeful attention” — you have a goal of seeking out specific things, such as colors, signs, sad chairs, etc.

Bill’s talk also made me think about the different ways we can pull meaning out of our collections of images, including at least:

1. Juxtaposition, by assembling a gallery of images in multiple next to each other
2. Addition, by way of annotation — adding text below or drawing directly on the image
3. Subtraction, cutting up the images, or removing elements (see: my de-signs, which Bill kindly mentions

James Weinberg is a designer, illustrator, and screenprinter out of Somerville MA. With a hands on approach he creates everything from illustration, brand identity, bookjackets, hand silkscreened posters, packaging and murals. His work has been featured in The AIGA BoNE Show, Communication Arts, Print and Uppercase.

“Not a day without a line”, or in its latin version “Nulla dies sine linea”. It comes from the Ancient Greece painter Apelle (4th century BC), who was one of the most famous of his time.

It enables one to steadily build and strengthen one’s unique relationship with creativity. At the intersection between the art of habits (doing something regularly — every day here) and the habits of art (drawing or writing lines), I find this motto to empower core aspects of the relationship to drawing practice:

• Befriending creativity by focusing on regular process over outcome
• Improving one’s craft by focusing on quantity over quality
• Creating one’s very own art by weaving life and art
• Going to the essence of expressiveness in a single line

Many of Casey Reas' programmatic artworks resemble things you see in nature—tangles of leaves, daffodils, bee colonies, algae—but they’re anything but.

To help further this exploration, Reas and his colleague Ben Fry (a principal of Fathom, a design and software consultancy in Boston) in 2001 developed their own software, called Processing, that bridges the divide between programming and art, making both processes more intuitive.
